Payroll
Payroll run properly, plus the California compliance around it: registration, classification, multi-state filings and certified payroll for public works.
Running payroll is largely a solved problem: the software is good and it is inexpensive. What is not solved is everything around it: whether that contractor should be a W-2 employee, what happens when you hire someone in Nevada, how to register with the EDD, and what a public works contract obliges you to file every week.
That is the part we handle. We are not a payroll bureau competing on cents per payslip; we are the people who make sure the thing is set up correctly and stays that way.
What we cover
- Payroll processing and system set-up, on the platform that suits you
- EDD registration and California new-hire reporting
- Worker classification: employee versus independent contractor, and the exposure if it has been wrong
- Multi-state payroll registration and filing as you hire outside California
- Quarterly and annual returns. Forms 941, 940, DE 9 and DE 9C
- W-2 and 1099-NEC preparation and filing
- Certified payroll reporting for public works contractors
- Timekeeping structure for government contractors, where cost allocation has to be defensible
Worker classification is where the money is
California Labor Code · EDD
The most expensive payroll mistake in California is not a late filing, it is treating someone as a contractor who should have been an employee. An EDD audit can reach back years and assess unpaid taxes, interest and penalties across everyone in the same category.
If you have a group of long-standing 1099 workers doing work that looks like core business activity, that is worth reviewing before somebody files a claim and triggers the question for you.
