Sales tax
California sales and use tax: registration, filing, nexus, district tax, and representation when the CDTFA opens an audit.
Sales tax is the tax most likely to be wrong and least likely to be noticed until it is expensive. It is administered by an agency separate from the IRS and the FTB, it reaches back years, and the liability is personal in ways income tax generally is not.
The CDTFA identified $745.3 million in sales and use tax deficiencies in FY2024-25, up roughly 19% on the prior year. Enforcement is not getting lighter.
Where it usually goes wrong

What triggers an audit, what happens first, and why the lookback can run to eight years.

The part almost everyone gets wrong. Combined rates reach 10.75%, and allocation errors compound quietly.

Use tax is the quiet one
CDTFA
If you buy equipment, software, supplies or furniture from an out-of-state seller who did not charge California tax, you generally owe use tax on it directly.
Almost nobody self-assesses this correctly, and it is one of the first things an auditor tests because it is easy to find in your own purchase records. If you have never accrued use tax, that is worth reviewing now rather than under audit.
