Most compliance failures are not the result of anybody deciding to ignore an obligation. They happen because nobody had the year laid out in front of them.

Dates below are the standard ones. Verify the current year's exact date before relying on any of them: several move when they fall on a weekend, and the state occasionally adjusts.

This is a planning aid, not advice, and it does not cover every obligation that might apply to you. Confirm the current year's dates before relying on them.

The pattern worth noticing

If you are a nonprofit with a 30 June year end, your audit needs to happen between July and September, because Form 990 and RRF-1 land on 15 November and public availability is required by 31 March.

That means the conversation about appointing an auditor belongs in May and June. By October the good fieldwork slots are gone, because every June-30 organisation in California wants the same weeks.

The California compliance calendar

Every filing a Los Angeles business, nonprofit or association owes in a year, in date order, with the statute beside it. One page, so it can go on a wall.

  • Federal, California and Los Angeles County dates in a single sequence
  • Entity by entity, so you only read your own rows
  • The citation for each date, so you can check it yourself
  • Reviewed and dated, and reissued when a date moves

Common questions

Not answered here? Ask us directly: we would rather explain it than have you guess.

Our fiscal year is not June or December. How do I work out my dates?

Most nonprofit and plan deadlines are expressed as periods after the fiscal year end rather than fixed calendar dates: • Form 990: the 15th day of the 5th month after year end • RRF-1: 4 months and 15 days after year end • Public availability under §12586(e): 9 months after year end • HOA review distribution: 120 days after year end • Escrow audited statements: 105 days after year end Apply those to your own year end and you have your calendar.

Which of these can be extended?

Tax returns generally can. Form 990 and Form 5500 both have extension mechanisms, and the Registry of Charities honours an IRS extension for RRF-1. Statutory distribution and availability requirements generally cannot. The HOA 120-day rule and the nonprofit nine-month public availability rule are not extendable, which is precisely why they need planning rather than reacting.

What happens if we miss one?

It varies enormously. A late sales tax return attracts penalty and interest. A late Form 5500 that should have included an audit can attract very substantial penalties. Missing an HOA distribution deadline is a governance failure your members can act on. Repeated failures on public works certified payroll can lead to debarment. If you have missed something, the outcome is almost always better when you self-correct than when an agency finds it.

Can we get this as a reminder?

Ask us and we will send you a version marked up for your own fiscal year end and entity type, which is more useful than the general version. For clients, these dates go into the engagement calendar and we chase them, so nobody has to remember.

How do we start?

Book a scoping call using the form on this page, or call us. We will ask what you need, who is asking you for it, and what condition your records are in, then tell you what the engagement involves and what it will cost before anything begins.
